New hardware, pre-surgery
Well tomorrow is the big day. I’ll be going under the knife and getting screwed by the Army — literally!
Today I went in to the doc for some pre-op paper work. They cut my cast off (which is glorious) and I’m now in a gigantic foam-padded boot thing. I also got to wash that half of my leg for the first time in about two weeks. Nothing compared to a little stint in the field I guess.
It was pretty amazing how much my calf has shrunk in only two weeks. And the atrophy in activity was definitely noticable as my calf immediately started to cramp up a little.

Here is my new "cast" -- a giant foam-padded boot. It's pretty amazing how it keeps the weight off the fractured part of my foot when I attempt to walk on it.
Last week I was also issued an EBI bone growth stimulator. This device is an electric coil that straps over a fractured bone. It produces the same electromagnetic (probably the biggest word in this blog) field that mimics the bodies own electromagnetic field produced when healing. The low-frequency waves penetrate to the bone to help break down the dead cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.
Clearly, this is some crazy shit. I thought this was some new, experimental Army thing, but my mom (a registered nurse) assures me it’s not. Then I read the manual and it’s been out since like the 70′s.
But now the FDA has approved the wear of it for 10 hours a day! Joy, I said.

The EBI bone stimulator. It's not AS cumbersome to wear for the requisite 10-hours a day as I thought it would be.
So surgery tomorrow afternoon. I got to thinking about the last surgery I had, which was my meniscus scope back in high school (also the right knee..I’m starting to think this leg is just gonna completely give out one of these days). Leading up to the surgery I don’t think I was really nervous. Our family friends had a pizza delivered to me late at night, since I couldn’t eat after midnight.
I’d like to think I know what to expect, but I guess I don’t. Right now my only real concern is the logistics behind the coming weeks. Mainly, getting Brittany safely to Oklahoma and then out of the airport, and to the hospital.
I’m supposed to have something like two weeks of conveleseant leave, but I’m not taking it. The last thing I need is to fall behind in FA school and have to recycle, therefore chipping off more of my soul to Oklahoma. That being said, there’s alot of couch time in my future, so expect many more blog entries…

Good luck on the surgery, broseph. Since when does the Army issue out Ab-tronics for “healing” injuries? That thing looks like the ankle bracelet T.I. has…just saying…
