Bad News…

I found out today that the “sore foot” I’ve been trying to ignore for the past three months is actually 2-3 fractures in my fifth metatarsal, otherwise known as a Jones Fracture.

This isn't my X-ray, but a good example. Except my fracture is on the right foot, about twice as wide, and there are 2 (possibly 3) of them.

I’m not sure when the problem started, but I think it was back in the summer at LDAC. Clearly getting my commission was a priority, and it didn’t bother me much, so I stuck it out. I really started to notice the pain during BOLC II, but again wanted to get just get through the course so I could get on to my branch training.
Throughout this time I thought it was probably a strain in my foot. Then a few weeks in to BOLC II I notice the “knuckle” sticking out the side of my foot and knew something else was going on. But because the pain was manageable, and the fact that I couldn’t report to BOLC III on a profile, I decided to wait yet again.

So, after dealing with this for close to five months, I went to the E.R. this morning to get it X-rayed. Needless to say the nurse was quite surprised after seeing my the multiple fractures on the X-ray that I walked into the E.R.

This is an example of the surgery I may need. Apparently it's done a lot for athelets to speed recovery and insuring the bones come back together.

Right now I’m on a 72-hour quarters profile, which means I didn’t go back to training this afternoon (I was at the hospital from 650-1115). I have an appointment Tuesday morning with an orthopedic doctor to get a prognosis. But from what the E.R. doc told me, there are two possible courses of action:

I could be in a cast or boot accompanied by crutches for up to eight weeks. If that doesn’t let it heal, or if the fracture is too severe, surgery is a likely candidate. Due to the low blood flow in this area of the foot and some other stuff I wikipedia-d, I may need to have a screw placed to secure the bone together. This would obviously suck.
After the prognosis I’ll find out my future in the current BOLC III class. Hopefully I won’t have to recycle and be stuck here for forever.

welcome to the club my friend: the big screw club.
spartz, i have 8, well now 7 screws plus a plate. Aint no thang!
screws arnt so bad, and they dont go off at the airport
-this whole army thing may not be its all “cracked” up to be
-ive seen a lot of people in the army get “screwed” by Uncle Sam
-At lease the surgery is free, or else the cost of this would “break” your bank

    Good Luck

Whoa… man.. I had something similar on my ankle too. I got it during basic. It was the inside side of my foot. A minor fracture that I ignored to get through basic and Ait and don’t recycle.

Had to tape it like crazy and even ran and roadmarch on it. When I went to the hospital, the doc was like, it might not stick again (the bone) probably you will need screws inserted. But I decided to go with the cast (no way i was gonna have screws on me). Within 6 weeks it healed but the bone is slightly sticking out.

Hopefully the cast works out. Look like you will be at BOLCIII for a while. Get better soon buddy.. ttyl

did you hear that? You are going to be in a club with Crane!!!!

Yes, it’s a very lucrative and exclusive club. I think when I have kids I’m actually going to start having them break their bones, so by the time they’re ready for the Army they’ll have entire metal skeletal systems.

    Hi Matt Spartz–

Do you remember me, Miss Cain from Glenbard East? I am lucky enough to be your brother Eric’s teacher for two senior English electives this semester, and he gave me your Spartzine connection today.

Guess what? I also had a Jones fracture back in 2000. I walked around on a stress fracture for a whole summer, thinking it would go away (ha hahahahaha) and then one very bad day it all broke and I spent about four hours in the emergency room and then two months in a cast and two months in a boot.

Anyway, so sorry about your foot but I am glad to be able to talk to you!

    – Miss Cain
or you can call me Connie like all the rest of the Class of 2004 does

Of course I remember the famous Miss Cane! That’s great you have a Spartz in your class! I’ll have to give him props for spreading the word about The Spartzine.

Sounds like you have your share of experience on the subject. I’ll be keeping you posted here on how mine goes.

Glad to here from you, Connie, keep comin’ back!
